Austin - Montego

The Austin Montego was the replacement car for both the outgoing Morris Ital and Austin Ambassador.

Manufactured by British Leyland from 1984 to 1988, and then by the Rover Group from 1988 to 1995. Available as either a 4 door saloon or 5 door estate, and badged as either Austin/Rover or MG . British Leyland developed this car with the fleet car market in its sights, pitching it against the already popular Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier.

In total, 546,000 Austin/Rover Montegos were produced and 23,000 MG Montegos.

The last car to roll off the production line at Cowley was signed by all those who worked on the car and can be found at the British Heritage Motoe Museum in Gaydon.
